LexisNexis-Cited 180% Surge in Deepfake Identity Fraud Highlights Need for Capture-Time Verification, Says Verified Reality
LONDON, ON — Aug. 11, 2026 — As synthetic media accelerates the "Liar's Dividend," traditional digital identity checks are under strain. A report from LexisNexis Risk Solutions, highlighted by Public Spectrum, described a 180% year-on-year increase in deepfake attacks successfully bypassing digital identity checks. Experts warn that sophisticated synthetic documents and images are used to create fraudulent accounts, hijack profiles, and execute unauthorized transactions.
In response, London-based Bizbio Inc., operator of the Verified Reality (VRA) protocol, argues that after-the-fact deepfake classifiers struggle to keep pace, and that capture-time telemetry is a stronger complement than pixel guessing alone. Software-only provenance such as C2PA can still be defeated by the "Analog Hole" — for example pointing a camera at a screen playing synthetic media — because the software may then sign a file whose depicted scene was never a live physical event. VRA records hardware-state indicators at the millisecond of capture so later changes can be detected.
"Software-only provenance standards like C2PA provide a useful digital envelope, but they are not a complete answer to the Analog Hole. If you point a camera at a 4K screen playing a deepfake, the software can still sign a lie," said Bryan Bakker, Founder & CEO of Bizbio Inc. "We interrogate device telemetry at capture time. We do not claim that a sealed file is court-admissible, or that it proves the scene was honest."
The protocol uses active interrogation of physical hardware states, including motion sensors and PRNU sensor fingerprints (which may associate media with a camera sensor, not a human identity). Captures are hashed at the device level and sealed into tamper-evident Truth Packets; C2PA credentials are attached on supported device paths. Independent Reality Verifiers are independent contractors. Files are designed to support authentication and chain-of-custody review. Admissibility is decided by the applicable court or decision-maker.
